Susan Barba is a poet whose work has been published in Poetry, The Yale Review, Antioch Review, Harvard Review, The Hudson Review, and elsewhere. She received a Ph.D. in comparative literature from Harvard University and an M.F.A. from Boston University. She is a senior editor with New York Review of Books, and she is also a translator of Armenian literature. Her first collection, Fair Sun, was published in 2017 and received the Anahit Literary Prize from Columbia University. At MacDowell, she wrote many poems for and made significant progress on her second poetry collection, geode, which was published by Black Sparrow Press in 2020.

Originally built near MacDowell's Union Street entrance, the Barnard Studio — which was funded by Barnard College music students — was re-located to its current site in 1910.
