Stefan Maier is an artist from Vancouver, Canada. His compositions, installations, and performances, examine emergent and historical sound technologies. Highlighting material instability and unruliness, his work explores the flows of sonic matter through sound systems, instruments, software, and bodies, to uncover alternate modes of authorship and listening possible within specific technologically-mediated situations.

His work has been presented by Haus der Kulturen der Welt (Berlin), Vancouver New Music, G(o)ng Tomorrow (Copenhagen), Musik der Jahrhunderte (Stuttgart), Experimental Studio des SWR (Freiburg), Talea Ensemble (New York), and Ultima (Oslo). He has been collaborating closely with Ragnhild May since 2015.

Stefan's installations have been shown at Haus der Kulturen der Welt, IAC Malmö, and 67 Ludlow (New York). He was guest curator of Technosphere Magazine in winter 2018 for an edition on sound technology.

Stefan holds an M.F.A. from Bard College where he mentored with Marina Rosenfeld. In 2017 he received a Mayor’s Art Award from the City of Vancouver and is nominee for the 2019 Gaudeamus Award.

Irving Fine

Stefan Maier worked in the Irving Fine studio.

Youngstown Studio was given to MacDowell by friends of Miss Myra McKeown in Youngstown, OH, where she promoted both art and music. It was renamed Irving Fine Studio in 1972 in honor of Irving Fine, a distinguished composer, conductor, and teacher who was a MacDowell Fellow during the 1940s and 1950s.
