Paul Rucker is a visual artist, composer, and musician who often combines media, integrating live performance, sound, original compositions, and visual art. While in residence, Rucker outlined work he will present as one of the featured inaugural artists at the Institute of Contemporary Art at Virginia Commonwealth University. His installation Storm in the Time of Shelter will feature modern KKK robes, artifacts, and books related to slavery, the Ku Klux Klan, and the legacy of white supremacy in the U.S. He received the John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship in 2017 as well as the Rauschenburg Fellowship in 2016.

Paul Rucker worked in the Putnam studio.

The Graphics Studio (as it was originally named) was converted to its present use in 1972–1974 through a grant from the Putnam Foundation, and originally served the property as both a power house and pump house.
