Paul Anthony Smith was born in Jamaica and raised in Miami before residing for several years in the Midwest, where he earned a B.F.A. from the Kansas City Art Institute. He now lives and works in New York City. At MacDowell, Smith engaged a new direction in his process-based work, and focused primarily on paintings. His paintings embellishing on the processional marching of Carnival participants were shown at the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center, and his picotage works (photographs with an aggressively worked surface) from the same series were shown at ZieherSmith Gallery in New York. He has also recently exhibited artwork in group and solo exhibitions at Brand New Gallery in Milan, Italy; Carrie Secrist Gallery in Chicago; Studio Museum in Harlem; Wallach Gallery at Columbia University; The Fowler Museum at University of California, Los Angeles; The Mckinney Avenue Contemporary (The MAC) in Dallas; and Seattle Art Museum.

Paul Anthony Smith worked in the Heinz studio.

The icehouse, built of fieldstone in 1914–1915, was a practical part of Marian MacDowell’s plan for a self-sufficient farm.
