After dabbling in radio, copywriting, acting, and theatre, Kanu finally landed at the Satyajit Ray Film and TV Institute, Kolkata in 2003, majoring in film direction. He discovered documentary at film school and got completely taken in. His first doc landed in competition at Cinema du Reel. Next, he directed and produced three more docs for international channels like NHK Japan, ZDF. and ARTE.
In 2010, he co-wrote director Dibakar Banerjee’s break out, Love, Sex aur Dhokha. In 2014, his debut feature Titli premiered at UnCertain Regard, Cannes and went on to win eight major awards and play at over 22 festivals across the world including AFI, Rotterdam, and Goteborg Filmfest, including a Best First Feature Film Award from the French Syndicate of Cinema Critics in 2015.
At MacDowell, Behl completed early development work for a 10-part series titled “Sard” based on the true events of the Nithari killings in India. He also completed a late polish draft for a feature screenplay titled Agra.
