Julian Maynard Smith is the founder and artistic director of Station House Opera, a performance company that has produced close to 40 productions since 1980. In that time his work has gone through many cycles of scale, material, technology, and social attention. Recent work includes At Home in Gaza and London, which used live video streaming to allow artists working in the two locations to create a single performance space where they shared their experiences of life and survival; and Dominoes, a run of up to 10,000 dominoes made of concrete building blocks connecting different sites across a city, built as a social installation by hundreds of volunteers. Other site-specific projects have been produced all over the world, from Azerbaijan to Kosovo, China to Brazil.
He is currently developing a performance that projects two rotating video views of remote locations, 360º around the room, concerned with disappearance and forgetting. At MacDowell, he began development of a performance/video installation (working title: Nowhere) that is a response to climate change.
