Jesse Bercowetz

Discipline: Visual Art – sculpture
Region: New York
MacDowell fellowships: Winter 2009, Summer 2011

The unruly artwork of Jesse Bercowetz is born out of a dark rural sensibility and is completely entrenched in the contemporary American psyche. His work is often fashioned through trial and error into material metaphor and holds no allegiance to any one process or genre. Bercowetz is committed to a non-market driven collaborative process and fostering interdependence through radical art making.

Bercowetz is a Visual Artist who lives in New York City. He is a graduate of The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. His work has been widely exhibited in galleries and museums, including: at The Brooklyn Museum of Art, Art Basel and PS1 / MOMA. He is a MacDowell Colony Fellow and has received numerous grants and residencies including: the Pollock / Krasner Foundation and the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council. His work has been reviewed in The New York Times, L.A. Weekly and ArtForum. He has mentored NYC youth through the Joan Mitchell Foundation, and immigrant artists as a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellow. Bercowetz recently returned from South East Asia on a research grant from The Jerome Foundation.
