Howard Barlow (1892-1972) was an American composer, arranger, conductor, and educator, most widely known for his work as music director for CBS, and conductor of NBC’s Voice of Firestone. Barlow received degrees from Reed College and Columbia University, and went on to lead numerous chorale ensembles in New York. While in New York, Barlow worked closely with the League of Composers, and founded the American National Orchestra. He then began a 15-year position as the conductor of the Columbia Symphony, and was engaged as a guest conductor with the Chicago Symphony, the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, the Philadelphia Orchestra, and as music director for the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. Additionally Barlow was a professor at Western Connecticut University, and eventually left his orchestral conducting career to conduct the NBC ensemble Voice of Firestone.
