Galway Mills Kinnell (1927-2014) was an American poet, writer, and translator from Providence, RI. He studied at Princeton University and earned an M.A. from the University of Rochester. He traveled around Europe and the Middle East and even studied in Paris on a Fulbright Fellowship, before returning to the United States as a social justice activist against the Vietnam War. Kinnell has been published in Beloit Poetry Journal and was poet laureate for the state of Vermont. He was a professor of creative writing at New York University and a Chancellor of the American Academy of Poets. Themes of social issues, nature, and spiritual dimensions appear in his works of poetry and he has also published a novel, a children’s book, and several translations.
