Ethan Lipton is a playwright and songwriter. Produced plays include Tumacho, Red-Handed Otter, Luther, Goodbye April Hello May, 100 Aspects of the Moon, and Meat. Musicals include The Outer Space (Lortell Nomination) and No Place to Go (Obie Award), both produced by the Public Theater in Joe’s Pub. Ethan is an alum of the Public’s Emerging Writers Group, a Clubbed Thumb associate, and a Playwrights Realm Page One fellow. He has received grants and commissions from NYFA, Playwrights Horizons, True Love Productions, MTC, the Public, the Civilians, Clubbed Thumb, and Barrington Stage Co., and been a Working Farm Playwright at Space on Ryder Farm. With his band, Ethan Lipton and His Orchestra, he has released four studio albums and played throughout New York and beyond, including Celebrate Brooklyn, MASS MoCA, the Gate Theatre in London, ATP, and Theatre de la Ville.

At MacDowell, he wrote songs for a musical adaptation of Thornton Wilder's The Skin of Our Teeth for the Public Theater, and completed a draft of Alpine Valley, a play commissioned by Manhattan Theatre Club through the Sloane Foundation. Ethan was an Alpert Award fellow during his residency.

Ethan Lipton worked in the New Hampshire studio.

New Hampshire Studio, originally named Peterborough Studio, was given to MacDowell by Mr. and Mrs. William Schofield, Mrs. H. A. Chamberlain, Mrs. Andrew Draper, and Miss Ruth Cheney. The studio was renamed in 1943. The Gilbert Verney Foundation established an endowed maintenance fund in 1990, and a bequest in memory of MacDowell Fellow Victor Candell underwrote the…
