David Hertzberg is a composer from Los Angeles. His opera The Wake World premiered in September 2017 at the Barnes Foundation on Opera Philadelphia's inaugural festival and won the Music Critics Association of North America's Best New Opera Award. In the spring of 2018, his opera The Rose Elf premiered in the catacombs of Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn and was cited as WQXR's Opera Event of the Year. Other recent premieres have included his Chamber Symphony with the American Composers Orchestra at Carnegie Hall, and the cantata Sunday Morning with New York City Opera at Lincoln Center.

At MacDowell, he began work on the libretto for his third opera, Grand Hotel, a site-specific reimagining of MGM's iconic 1932 film of the same name, to be presented by The Industry in Los Angeles in early 2021. He also worked on a string quartet for Curtis on Tour, to be performed by the Vera Quartet in the 2019-2020 season.

Given to the residency by the Monday Music Club of Orange, NJ, Monday Music Studio is sited next to an enormous boulder deposited by glaciers thousands of years ago.
