Carl is the recipient of a 2013 Kresge Artist Fellowship and was named 2014 guest curator of Detroit’s Carr Center. Also in 2014 Complex Online Magazine named him one of “Twenty Detroit Artists You Should Know.” He was featured in Essay'd, a monthly publication about Detroit artists. He is a Yaddo Fellow, and MacDowell Fellow.

At MacDowell, he completed the writing and illustration of his graphic novel, Dead & Lost in Detroit. The book is a surreal, existential, noir flavored comic and tells the story of a broken man dealing with the end of a marriage and the start of the worst job he's ever had.

Carl Wilson worked in the Putnam studio.

The Graphics Studio (as it was originally named) was converted to its present use in 1972–1974 through a grant from the Putnam Foundation, and originally served the property as both a power house and pump house.
