The Campaign for the Second Century is a commitment to the resources that MacDowell provides artists every day. An unprecedented initiative for the Colony, this Campaign will invest $13 million in Fellowships, stipends, and facilities, truly enhancing the residency experience for generations to come.
Fellowships provide every resident artist the use of a private studio, accommodations, meals, and the opportunity to engage with a dynamic artistic community for up to two months. The Campaign will add $5.5 million to the Colony’s endowment to fund Fellowships. This investment will nurture the most promising artists into the future.
The Campaign has also established modest stipends to help replace lost income and cover travel, rent, and other continuing expenses for accepted artists. Nearly $1 million has been committed to this initiative, which gives artists with demonstrated need the peace of mind to work experimentally and productively while at the Colony.

Unveiled in 2008, the $1.85 million renovation of Colony Hall dramatically improved MacDowell’s great room, dining area, and kitchen. By adding more common space, this project greatly improved the facility where artists engage in the dynamic community of fellow residents. Also included in the project, new administrative offices and a dedicated maintenance building have updated the Colony’s artist support services.The revitalization of the Colony’s beloved Savidge Library through a combination of new construction and preservation stands as the centerpiece of the Campaign. Responding to the evolving needs of artists and their collaborations, a $2.5 million transformation of the historic library will create a beautiful and versatile center for the exchange of ideas and collaboration.
Additional Campaign funds have improved the Colony’s infrastructure. Special building projects have revitalized Edward MacDowell’s original Log Cabin studio, refurbished the Music Room in the MacDowells’ home at Hillcrest, and endowed studio maintenance funds. Capacity building investments in long-term organization and strategy will greatly impact MacDowell’s ability to adapt to the changing environment of non-profit operations in the 21st century.
In sum, the Campaign will ensure the excellence of MacDowell’s residency program as the Colony embarks on its second century of supporting artists in their creative pursuits.
