One of my many fond memories, is the midsummer evening I broke what at the time were discipline-specific seating arrangements at dinner. At the playwriters table, I was regailed by what now seems lilke an urban legend, but at the time, in the late Summer of 1989 seemed a mitzvah from G-d's mouth to my ears. At the time, actress/singer/celebrity Pia Zidora was starring in The Diary of Ann Frank on Broadway in the role of the young diarist in a production financed by her husband. In the third act, while Nazi's violently pounded the Frank door, someone in the audience stood up and shouted "she's upstairs!"

It absolutely breaks my heart that I will not be able to attend the reunion! My only consolation is that I will be away doing what the Colony would want me to do otherwise: I'll be off on a research trip, visiting the Jim Crow Museum in Michigan, wandering through waist-high weeds in the Missouri Ozarks, looking for the grave of Cedar County's eldest slave, and taking part in other adventures, gathering material for my third book of poems. Thank you, MacDowell Colony, for allowing me into Eden, not once, but four times. I am forever grateful and hold you in my heart!
