The MacDowell Colony is located on 450 acres in the Monadnock Region of New Hampshire. The word “monadnock” is derived from the Abenaki language meaning “smooth mountain,” the inspiration of which is Mount Monadnock, the area's highest peak at 3,165 feet and one you can see directly from the Colony.

Mount Monadnock is one beauty among many in the greater Peterborough region. Three protected rivers flow through Peterborough and play host to more than 117 species of birds, including the bald eagle, the blue heron, the moon loon, and the osprey. Other mountains, parks, and lakes are situated nearby, creating a haven for many species of animals, some endangered. The sanctuary-like environment of the area also attracts many who tour here each season. While New Hampshire is noted for its glorious autumns, Peterborough offers superb winter recreation as well as rich culture in the summer and throughout the year. Stage companies, museums, fine dining, and world-class music are among the community's many arts and cultural venues.

The Colony itself has long been associated with the arts in southern New Hampshire. Named Peterborough's First Citizen in 1949, Marian MacDowell, the cofounder of the Colony, worked tirelessly on behalf of the local community. She and MacDowell are often credited with infusing Peterborough with a cultural vibrancy that sustained the town when its mills began their decline in the early 20th century.

That spirit is very much alive today, and it is why many artists who are welcomed to MacDowell often mention the strange sense of homecoming they experience. The region's natural beauty, its cultural feel, and its unique artistic sensibility are all palpable. As a registered national landmark by the U.S. government, The MacDowell Colony is likely to anchor and preserve that spirit for some time.
