MacDowell Clubs and Fraternal Organizations
MacDowell also maintains several historic partnerships with a national network of MacDowell clubs and arts-based fraternal organizations. Gifts from these organizations provide annual contributions for Fellowships, studio maintenance, and/or general operating support. Two of these organizations have committed significant resources to renovate the studios they support. The Delta Omicron International Music Fraternity, which in 1927 helped build Delta Omicron Studio at the Colony, raised funds for Delta Omicron Studio’s renovation. Sigma Alpha Iota Philanthropies has awarded the Colony a grant toward the renovation of Pan’s Cottage, the residence hall that it helped build in 1927.
The MacDowell Colony is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt nonprofit corporation founded in 1907 under the laws of the state of New York “to promote the arts.” The Internal Revenue Service has certified that The MacDowell Colony is an organization described in Code Section 509(a)(2) of the Internal Revenue Code as revised in 1969, and not a private foundation as defined in Section 509(a). Consequently, all gifts and bequests to the Colony are fully deductible for income and estate tax purposes. A copy of the Colony’s most recent audited financial statement is available here. The Colony also files an informational tax return (IRS 990) available online through GuideStar.
