The 33rd Studio

Filmmaker Charles Poekel gathered a handful of friends he met at MacDowell in 2017 to illustrate the value of a MacDowell Colony residency in this humorous yet touching three-minute film.

Supporting the Arts

By supporting artists at The MacDowell Colony, you become part of the creative process and help make the world a better place through art. Every donation goes into fellowships that provide studio space, uninterrupted work time, living accommodations, and multidisciplinary exchange for nearly 300 artists each year. With no artist fees, MacDowell brings together architects, composers, filmmakers, interdisciplinary artists, theatre artists, visual artists, and writers to share ideas, collaborate, and lift their work to new heights. Fellowships supported by donors like you have supported legendary artists such as Thornton Wilder, James Baldwin, Aaron Copland, Alice Walker, Leonard Bernstein, and Milton Avery as well as new works by David Lang, Glenn Ligon, Laura Poitras, Arturo O’Farrill, Andrew Norman, Annie Baker, Ayad Ahktar, and Ta-Nehisi Coates. MacDowell residencies have helped launch careers, and MacDowell Fellows have gone on to earn 79 Pulitzer Prizes, along with numerous Academy Awards, National Book Awards, Guggenheim and MacArthur fellowships, National Book Awards, and other major distinctions.
