FELLOWSHIP GIFTS

Major gifts designated for Fellowships perpetuate the Colony's tradition of accepting artists solely on the basis of talent. The Colony charges no residency fees and must raise funds to underwrite the costs of Fellowships for more than 250 artists annually.

There are two kinds of Fellowships at The MacDowell Colony:

ENDOWED FELLOWSHIPS

Endowed Fellowships, based on investment income from gifts held in the Colony's endowment fund, provide support in perpetuity for one or more residencies each year. An Endowed Fellowship gift of $100,000 generates income to support the residency of one artist annually in perpetuity.

ANNUAL FELLOWSHIPS

Annual Fellowships are contributions designated by the donor to underwrite the costs of one or more residencies in the year the gift is made. An Annual Fellowship gift of $10,000 supports a residency of up to two months for one artist at the Colony during the current year.

Annual Fellowships and Endowed Fellowships can be arranged to support multiple residencies during a single year or each year in perpetuity, respectively. Fellowships may be designated to support an outstanding artist, artists in a particular discipline, or artists from a specific geographic area. Fellowships may be named for the donor or named in someone's memory, or they may be anonymous, as the donor requests.

Donors of Fellowships receive information about the artist(s) designated to benefit from their gift. Following their residencies, artists often write letters about their current work to the donors of their Fellowships. Fellowships are listed in The MacDowell Colony's Annual Report; Endowed Fellowships are listed every year. Fellowship gifts are fully tax-deductible to the extent provided by law.
