National Trip

As a National Council member, you will be invited to participate in MacDowell's annual National Trip, an exclusive excursion to a major contemporary art center. Participants meet with local Colony Fellows and arts patrons, enjoy visits to contemporary art collections and sites, and attend special performances and presentations of work by MacDowell artists. Members of MacDowell’s National Council, a leading group of donors who are essential to the Colony’s mission, receive exclusive invitations to join these art-filled excursions.

In October of 2008, MacDowell’s first National Trip to San Francisco featured attendance at the San Francisco Opera’s world premiere performance of The Bonesetter’s Daughter by Colony Fellow and composer Stewart Wallace and author and librettist Amy Tan, as well as a reunion brunch with Colony Fellows and private tours of outstanding art collections in the Bay Area.

A four-day National Trip to Santa Fe in July of 2009 brought patrons to the Santa Fe Opera for an opening night dinner and the world premiere of The Letter by Colony Fellow and composer Paul Moravec and librettist Terry Teachout. The itinerary also included a backstage tour of the opera house; private receptions with Colony Fellows; visits to the studios of renowned Colony Fellow artists and several superb private art collections; and a tour of notable arts sites in the area.
