The annual Nancy Hanks Lecture on Arts and Public Policy in Washington, D.C., was established to honor the memory of Nancy Hanks, chairwoman of the National Endowment for the Arts from 1969-1977, and to provide an opportunity for public discourse at the highest level on the importance of the arts and culture to our nation's well-being.
The Colony is proud to announce that on March 12, 2007, noted broadcast journalist, author, and MacDowell Chairman Robert MacNeil addressed the distinguished assembly of cultural leaders and public officials who gathered for the event at the Kennedy Center. Colony Fellows Galway Kinnell, poet, and Anthony Davis, composer, performed at the ceremony. Past presenters have included actor and filmmaker Robert Redford, playwright and MacDowell Fellow Wendy Wasserstein, poet Maya Angelou, and historian Arthur Schlesinger, Jr.
