The MacDowell Film and Film Series

On the occasion of its Centennial, The MacDowell Colony wanted to document the artistic expression of a MacDowell Fellowship.  The department of film and media at The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) was delighted to participate by helping create a touring film and new media series:

Seasons of MacDowell and Filmmakers at MacDowell: The Studio System Reconsidered

To create the new work, four MacDowell Fellows (selected by an anonymous panel) were commissioned to make a single film by each creating 20 minutes originating from their own script and based on a particular season.  The producers selected artists known for creative innovations in the various fields of animation (George Griffin), experimental film (Elisabeth Subrin), documentary film (David Petersen), and fiction film (Michael Almereyda). They were given free rein to make works in whatever format or genre they felt best represented their ideas, “season,” and the MacDowell spirit. The project has generated a quartet of outstanding work executively produced by Michael Sullivan of Frontline. And they form a beautiful suite (or cycle) to premiere at MoMA on May 2, 2007 alongside a series of existing films by a broad selection of Colony Fellows.

World Premiere: The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York, New York May 2nd -16th
