FELLOWSHIPS Gifts for Residencies and Studios Gifts to underwrite Fellowships for artists and to maintain the Colony's studios and residency buildings are essential in helping MacDowell continue its mission of the past 97 years. Major gifts designated for Fellowships perpetuate the Colony's tradition of accepting artists solely on the basis of talent. Fifty-nine annual and endowed Fellowships and 11 annual and endowed studio maintenance grants were given during 2003-2004, thanks to the generosity of many friends of the Colony. “It's impossible for me to achieve the kind of total immersion, at home, that writing a novel requires.
